교단으로 복귀한 이수호 전 민노총 위원장

Lee Soo-ho, former president of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, has returned to his teaching job at a high school in Seoul yesterday after spending two years at the national umbrella labor group.
The 57-year-old former labor activist will teach Korean literature at SunRin Internet High School, located in Yongsan-gu, where he taught before he ran for presidency of the KCTU in 2004.
The KCTU is the nation`s second largest umbrella labor group, with around 600,000 members from 740 labor unions across the country.
Lee`s term began in February 2004 and was due to end in early 2007, but he stepped down last October to take responsibility for a corruption scandal surrounding one of the organization`s high-ranking officials.
"I came back where I belonged. I`m brimming with new hope," Lee told The Korea Herald. "I`ve never stopped thinking about returning (to school). As an educator, I wish to become a needed and essential teacher for the students." He said being a labor activist and a teacher are similar as far as working toward the betterment of society.
"Guiding students who will lead this changing society in the future is just as good as leading the labor movement," Lee said.
Lee will be in charge of teaching sophomores and counseling students at the school.
He said he is not sure whether or not he would leave the teaching post again, saying "nobody knows what will happen," but as for now, he wants to devote himself to teaching in the years to come.
Lee started his teaching job in 1974 after graduating from Yeungnam University in North Gyeongsang Province with a bachelor`s degree in Korean literature.

이수호 전 민주노총위원장이 어제 2년간의 위원장직을 마치고 본업으로 돌아와 고등학교 교단에 다시 섰다.
이 전 위원장 (57)은 이날 2004년 초 민주노총 위원장으로 선출되기 전까지 근무했던 용산구에 있는 선린인터넷고에 출근해 국어 교사 생활을 시작했다.
민주노총은 전국 740여개 노조에 60만명의 조합원을 두고 있는 국내 2위의 노동단체이다.
이 전 위원장의 임기는 2004년 2월부터 2007년 초까지 였지만 지난해 10월 민주노총 고위간부의 비리 의혹에 대한 책임을 지고 위원장직을 중도에 사퇴했다.
이 전 위원장은 “다시 내 자리로 돌아와 기분이 좋다”고 코리아 헤럴드에 말했다. “교직을 떠나는 일은 생각해 본적도 없다. 교육자로서 학생들에게 꼭 필요한 선생님이 되고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 보다 나은 사회를 위해 일한다는 점에서 노동운동가나 교사나 비슷한 점이 많다고 말했다.
“미래 우리 사회의 변화를 이끌어 나갈 학생들은 지도하는 일은 노동운동을 이끄는 것만큼 좋은 일이다”라고 그는 말했다.
이 전 위원장은 학교에서 고 2 학생들을 상대로 학생 상담업무를 맡게 된다.
그는 “앞일은 아무도 모르는 것이지만 현재로서는 향후 몇 년간 교직에만 충실하고 싶다”며 다시 교직을 떠날지 여부를 확신하지 못한다고 말했다.
이 전 위원장은 경북 영남대 국문학과를 졸업한 뒤 1974년부터 교직 생활을 시작했다.
